PROJECT QUILT | The back story and Square #1!

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, I am embarking on a quilt project. It is simple really - I am going to make a pathwork quilt. But the reason why is slightly more different than simply making a quilt. Recently myself, my sister and my parents have had a few short conversations about their wills. They told me that now I am 18 I will be my siblings sole guardian if anything were to happen to them...and that was a huge thing to spring on someone! I mean, I am only 18! My job barely covers MY monthly needs, how would I potentially support 3 people! It was a very scary thought. Mother also asked my sister and I which of her rings we wanted - her engagement ring, her eternity ring or her nan's engagement ring. That got me thinking that one day, when I have a family, I want to have something to leave to them if anything were to happen to me. I want to give them something they can pass on, or add too.

And so I came up with the idea of a patchwork quilt. It is simple, knitted and will be made or lots of different squares with lots of different colours. Some will have embroidered pictures on, some will be mixed colour wool, some will be plain...it really will be a mix and match of colours. It is not going to be an easy thing to do as I often start a project and never finish it, however I feel this is different as it would be for my family and for future generations of my family. I have already got one ball of 'funky' wool to start off with:

and I have ordered a few more which hopefully should be delivered soon! I aim to try and get at least 2 squares done a week as I am competent at knitting so it hopefully shouldn't take me too long to do the squares! I don't know what size I am going to do them yet, I am going to start by casting off with 25, then try 50 etc etc and see which is the best size for my squares! Everyone has a different way of doing it, I don't want to follow a pattern or the rules, this is going to be mine and unique!

I also have THE cutest knitting needles ever. They are a pale ice blue and look...

They have bubbles in! I cannot wait to break them in and start this project!

For those who follow me on Instagram, Tumblr or Twitter, I will be hashtagging my pictures to do with this with "#projectquilt" so if you want to catch up on my progress of see the pictures that is where they will be! I will try and post about them on here every now and again and show you the progress, but I thought I would have that hashtag so that I do not have to do a post on here every week, if you see what I mean!

If anyone wants to contact me and ask about it, or anything else you have seen on my blog then contact me through my email on the left! See you soon, and wish me luck!
